It’s important to know the primary colors of automotive fluids so you can tell what is leaking out of your automobile. C&C Automotive warns that it may not be safe to drive your automobile depending on the fluid leak. For example, you wouldn’t want to drive your car, truck, or utility vehicle if it has a serious oil leak. This will damage the engine. Let’s talk about the colors of auto fluids below.
Blue
Usually, it is safe to continue to drive your automobile if blue fluid is leaking out of it. This is because the fluid is likely windshield cleaning solution. To be safe, however, check to make sure your engine coolant isn’t blue, as well.
Brown
You know that motor oil is brown. Brake fluid is also light brown to dark brown depending on its age, differential fluid is brown, and when it gets old, transmission fluid is brown. In other words, think twice about driving your automobile if it is leaking brown fluid.
Clear
Unless it smells like gasoline or diesel fuel, the clear fluid leaking from your automobile is just water. When you run the AC, condensation drips from it. You have also likely seen water dripping out of your tailpipe on a cold morning.
Green
Green or blue-green fluid is antifreeze/coolant, and you shouldn’t drive your automobile if it is leaking this fluid. Driving a car, truck, or utility vehicle that is leaking coolant is just asking for your engine to overheat.
Orange
If the fluid on your garage floor is orange, it could be old transmission fluid or engine coolant that has rust in it. If you drive an automobile that has a ton of miles on it, it’s possible that your radiator’s bottom is corroded and has rusted through.
Pink
Pink fluid is a bad sign of serious transmission trouble. When the transmission fluid is pink, it is being mixed with engine coolant. This means you have a serious leak between the transmission and the cooling system.
Red
There are many auto fluids that come in the color red. Although normally brown, brake fluid can be red depending on the brand you buy. Many brands of engine coolant are red, power steering fluid is red, and transmission fluid is red.
Yellow
Finally, neon yellow automotive fluid is antifreeze/coolant. You definitely cannot mistake this color.
