Your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s headlights can get overly bright if the alternator is going bad. On average, the alternator generates up to 14.5 volts. If it is malfunctioning, it might generate more voltage and this can cause a problem with your electrical system, including overly bright lights. As the alternator continues to die, the lights will dim to the point that it will be difficult to see. C&C Automotive lists the other signs of the faulty alternator below.
Burning Wires or Rubber
Aside from lights that are too bright, you may also smell burning wires or burning rubber coming from your engine. This is definitely a sign that the electrical system is overloaded. Again, this can be caused by a malfunctioning alternator.
ALT, GEN, or Battery Light
You will also get a dashboard warning that there is something wrong with the electrical system in the form of a battery-shaped light, a GEN light, or an ALT light. It’s important to take this warning seriously and have the alternator and battery tested right away.
Frequent Engine Stalling
If your engine is also stalling frequently, this points to a problem with the alternator. Aside from your vehicle’s lights, the alternator also powers the spark plugs. If it is unable to do so, the plugs will misfire and your engine will stall.
Hard Starts/Dead Battery
You may also find it difficult to get your automobile started with a dying alternator. In fact, if the alternator is no longer able to charge the battery, the battery will die and you will have a dead engine. Jump-starting the battery will not solve the problem.
Malfunctioning Accessories
The alternator also provides power to your vehicle’s power accessories. This includes things such as the power seats, the seat warmers, the radio, and the navigation system. If your vehicle’s accessories start to slow down or malfunction, you’ve got a bad alternator.
Whining or Growling Sounds
Finally, if you hear whining sounds coming from the engine, the alternator belt is too loose. You might also hear growling sounds that indicate a problem with the alternator itself.
