Automotive Filter Changing Schedule

Before we begin, C&C Automotive wants to advise that the guidelines below are general guidelines. The best filter-changing schedule for your automobile will be found in your owner’s manual. Still, these are the recommended mileage milestones for each filter in your car, truck, or utility vehicle as understood by vehicle manufacturers and auto service technicians. It’s important to keep your automobile filters clean by replacing them when they need them. Clogged filters can cause a reduction in fuel economy, engine performance issues, and in the case of the oil filter, a clogged filter can damage the engine.

Air

The air filter is located in the engine. This filter keeps the air that flows into the engine clean. The air must run through the filter before it is routed to the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber needs clean air and fuel in each cylinder to be detonated to create engine combustion. It is this engine combustion that starts and runs your automobile. Change the air filter every 12,000 miles.

Cabin

The cabin also has a filter in some vehicle makes and models. If your automobile has a cabin air filter, this needs to be changed every 30,000 miles. This filter keeps the air in your passenger cabin free of contaminants and dirt so that you don’t feel sick when you drive your automobile. If you do feel sick when you drive your automobile, your cabin filter may be dirty.

Fuel

The fuel filter cleans the fuel twice before it is routed to the fuel injectors. Once in the fuel injectors, it is sprayed into the cylinders or intake manifold. It is crucial that there are no contaminants, dirt, or sediment in the fuel because this can affect how well it burns in the combustion chamber. The fuel filter needs to be changed every two years or every 30,000 miles. Whichever comes first.

Oil

Finally, as we mentioned in the introduction, a dirty oil filter can actually damage your engine. The oil filter is responsible for clearing out all of the dirt and debris that the oil picks up when it circulates through the engine. A clogged oil filter can stop oil circulation. Your engine will be oil-starved and it will overheat, seize up, and die within hours.
