Bring your car, SUV, or truck to our shop if you think it needs a tune-up. We will inspect the ignition system and perform any necessary services or repairs. If your vehicle is overdue for a tune-up, you will have one or more of the problems listed below.
Difficult or No Starts
It can be a real pain to get your car started if it needs a tune-up. The reason why is that the spark plugs may no longer be able to produce sparks because they are worn out. Without sparks, you have no fire in the cylinders. Consequently, your engine may be difficult to start. In severe cases, you will not be able to start the engine no matter how many times you try.
Misfiring Engine
If some of the plugs are working, your engine may start. This does not mean, however, that the engine will run smoothly. Rather, it will misfire, which means it will cut out because some of the cylinders will not ignite in the firing sequence. The most common reason why a cylinder will not ignite is a worn spark plug. Consequently, misfiring is also a sign your engine needs a tune-up.
Rough Idling
Unfortunately, the problems will not stop there. You will also have to deal with a rough idle while the engine is misfiring. In fact, your engine may stall whenever you are sitting at an idle. As the plugs continue to wear out, there may come a point when you will be unable to restart the automobile after it has stalled. It’s better to get the plugs replaced at the first sign of trouble.
Performance Trouble
Another sign of trouble is lagging or surging. If some of the plugs are failing to fire their cylinders, your engine will lag and have difficulties running and accelerating. The plugs can also over-fire in the cylinders – fire too often – and this will cause the engine to surge. These performance problems indicate you need to have the ignition system tuned and the plugs replaced.
Reduced Efficiency
Finally, with gas prices as high as they are, perhaps the worst thing that happens when your car is overdue for a tune-up is a reduction in the efficiency of the fuel consumption. Your engine will use more fuel while it is running, and this will reduce the fuel mileage.
